Patterns can be very helpful to work with but from working on this dress I've realised you can't trust your eyes you have to trust the measurements and stepping back from the garment on a dummy. Also that the bigger a persons assets the more it influences a hem or shape of a garment to fit the body shape eg. stomach, bust, bum sizes can make a garments dip in different places when it's not on them..

Edwardian Corset Draft 1

Edwardian Corset

Since we finished the hat project we moved onto corsets. I choice to do a Edwardian corset as I'd never tried to make one of those styles before. I've done 18th Century and Victorian. I love how different corsets create different shapes with the body.



















I picked a beautiful pattern which is called the straight front Edwardian corset. I want to try a later Elizabethan corset and a French corset .

I've enjoyed trying out the techniques that Christine uses when making corsets like how she does the boning, doubling it up. I want a simple corset with a lace top like in the picture above. Means I can wear it outside of my clothes or under clothes.

I printed off  the paper for Hamelet today. I'm disappointed we missed the last meeting as we were on Legally Blonde.I would have prioritised Hamelet as first. I would have liked to have seem how Gillian resolved the problems of costume numbers and makes though from what I can tell from what other people said I would have dealt with it differently.

Hat Making Part 3

Spent the day hand sewing the head band and petershum edge onto the hat. It was very relaxing. Enjoyed sitting there hand sewing for the day.

Finished Hat

I really loved the process of making the hat. This will not be the last hat I make. I think if everything went wrong with costumes I'd love to set up my own hat shop or something. I love how you can do whatever you want and decorate it as much as you like. I love how delicate the details can be but it can spoil you for choice.

Hat Making Part 2

So much fun. I really enjoy the experience of making a hat because it's so delicate and relaxing. I learned how to stab stitch properly and wire stitch.

Legally Blonde Quick Change Dress

I never thought about using magnets for quick changes. Very clever idea. Make pockets in the interfacing and then put the magnets into the pockets before sewing them up but note don't take the magnets right to the bottom and it can make the garment heavy.

Fake Knotes

I'd never tried to do anything like this so it was interesting to see how a look like this could be achieved without having a proper neck tie. We have out first meeting about Hamlet tomorrow which I'm excited about. I can't wait to start my management project and start making for Hamlet.

First Day Back in Costume

I've really enjoyed my first day back in costume. Seeing what shows are going on in the department and what shows we've been given to focus on. I'm on Legally blonde and Hamlet for now which I am so excited about. We've also started to talk about the management project for this term which will be for Opera; I've already started to make notes of things to include in this project so as to give me a good starting point. I really want to take on the management rule next year but I don't know if I'll be able to do it. I'm hoping this project will help me see how I could achieve this and if I would be a good manager though evaluating the skills that a good manager should have.

Today I started to get into the habit of taking my time when doing alterations and adjustments; hoping this will help me improve from last team and help me keep a more level head when I get stressed. I've also started to double check any doubles I may have when doing adjustments to a garment. I also learned to use the invisible hemmer for the first time which makes life so much easier when it comes to hemming garments. I think it's good to know both ways though because in future  might not have one to hand.
